A Paks resident was recently informed that unknown individuals had obtained his email account login details and used card information stored in his account to book a room at a foreign hotel.
The man learned from a feedback questionnaire sent by an American hotel that more than 400,000 forints had been withdrawn from his account. It emerged that the criminals had likely obtained his password a few days earlier, as all emails had disappeared from his inbox. Among the deleted messages was a previous travel booking in which the system had also retained his bank card details.
The victim did not receive a notification on his phone about the payment, so he did not immediately notice the misuse. Once the bank confirmed that the amount had indeed been withdrawn, he immediately notified the financial institution and filed a report with the police.
The bank ultimately reimbursed the damage caused. The Paks Police Headquarters is investigating an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of fraud committed using an information system.
