The prosecutor has proposed detention for MP Hankó Balázs and an associate on suspicion of breach of trust. The Kecskemét District Court will decide on 1 October 2026.
Prosecutor seeks detention of Hankó Balázs following arrest
According to a press release from the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor's Office, on Monday evening Dr. Hankó Balázs, a member of parliament, and an associate were taken into custody and subsequently underwent questioning as suspects. The proceedings are part of a prosecutorial investigation related to the National Cultural Foundation.
According to reporting by infostart.hu, the subject of suspicion is the crime of breach of trust committed in criminal conspiracy causing particularly significant material damage. According to the accusation, the act affected the central budget to a considerable extent.
On Tuesday, the prosecutor proposed to the court that both suspects be remanded in custody. In addition to the coercive measure, several special grounds exist: the gravity of the alleged crime, as well as the suspects' extensive network of connections provide reasonable grounds for concern about the realistic risk of flight and concealment. The prosecutor also cited the fact that due to the organised and hierarchical nature of the conduct over an extended period, there is well-founded reason to fear unlawful interference with the proceedings.
According to the motion, the aims to be achieved through detention – ensuring the presence of the suspects and preventing obstruction of evidence – cannot be achieved through other coercive measures.
The investigating judge of the Kecskemét District Court will make a decision on the detention on 1 October 2026, Thursday.
