Government official falsified land registry for seven years
The Szeged Regional Investigating Prosecutor's Office is investigating a case in which an employee of a state office modified land registry records for money over a period of years. The suspect has already been taken into custody, and the court has ordered his detention.
According to the investigation, an employee working in the land registry department of a central Hungarian government office has manipulated the map section of the public land register for more than seven years since 2018. By disregarding proper procedure, he entered false information and deleted data from the records. The number of such interventions amounts to almost fifty.
The official acted in the hope of material gain: he received illegal compensation from persons related to real estate in exchange for illegally modifying the official database. As a result of these manipulations, discrepancies arose between the property deeds and the map data for certain plots.
Last week, the prosecutor's office conducted searches at several properties. During the house searches, computer equipment, documents and cash were seized. Investigators questioned two real estate agents as suspects: one paid the official regarding his own flat, whilst the other assisted in facilitating the corruption transactions. Of the three suspects, only the official is being held in detention, whilst the two intermediaries are defending themselves in freedom. All three protested the accusations and made no confessional statements.
