Police investigation launched into Gondosóra programme

The Budapest Metropolitan Police Headquarters (BRFK) has ordered an investigation into the Gondosóra programme on suspicion of breach of trust, the MTI reported on Friday, based on a response to an enquiry from Telex. Index also confirmed that proceedings have been initiated.

The government announced in August that it had filed a complaint following a review of the programme. Zoltán Tanács, minister of science and technology, suggested substantial overpricing in light of the hundred-billion-forint costs. Tanács subsequently informed the public that the former ruling party may have used the Gondosóra programme to collect personal data, and therefore the government is filing a report with the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH).

Prime Minister Péter Magyar described the programme as "outright theft" at a government spokesperson briefing on 23 July. He stated that completely outdated technology was used and was vastly overpriced. He added: "this was also a NER deal", there will be proceedings, and the government may also file a separate complaint.

The Integrity Authority signalled to the MTI in mid-July that it had filed a complaint on suspicion of multiple criminal offences, based on an interim report prepared regarding investigations into certain procurements under the programme. The authority also initiated a procedure for irregularities at the directing body and requested that other competent authorities commence proceedings.
