A man from Bátonyterenyei sold massage devices purchased cheaply at a Budapest market at inflated prices, targeting elderly people. Police arrested him within a short time and returned the stolen money to the victims.

A man from Bátonyterenyei regularly visited elderly people at their homes and sold them cheaply purchased massage devices at markups of several hundred per cent, according to police.hu.
According to the investigation data, the man purchased the devices individually for approximately 3,000 forints at a Budapest market. He then sold these at significantly higher prices in various parts of the country, selecting locations at random: according to his own account, he "pointed at" different settlements on a map.
He primarily sought out houses where elderly people were present. Most recently he contacted an 87-year-old woman from Encs, offering her three devices for a total of 99,000 forints. Previously, he took 80,000 forints from a 78-year-old woman in Szerencs for a single massage device.
Encs police, working together with staff from the Bátonyterenyei Police Headquarters, identified and arrested the suspect within a short time. The man admitted to both offences, and the authorities returned the defrauded amount to the victims.
The Encs Police Headquarters is conducting criminal proceedings against the man for fraud and is also investigating the nationwide scope of his activities.
Police are asking citizens not to let unknown door-to-door sellers into their homes, to verify the actual value of recommended products before making a purchase, and to alert elderly relatives to fraud committed using similar methods.
