Prosecutors seek prison for drunk driver who caused fatal crash near Szakcs

The Szekszárd District Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against a 77-year-old man who caused a fatal traffic accident two years ago whilst intoxicated after a family celebration, the Tolna County Chief Prosecutor's Office announced. According to 24.hu, the defendant drove his partner's 31-year-old son, 29-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old child home whilst under moderate alcohol influence.

Between Szakcs and Kocsola, on a right-hand curve, he was driving at 123–127 km/h instead of the permitted 90 km/h. The vehicle drifted onto the left-hand shoulder, overturned, and then collided with a tree.

The driver and the man sitting next to him wore seatbelts, but the woman and child in the rear seats did not, and there was no child safety system in the vehicle. The 31-year-old man died at the scene. The woman in the rear seat sustained injuries causing permanent disability and serious health deterioration, and the 7-year-old child's injuries could heal within 10–12 months. The defendant suffered only minor injuries.

The prosecutor's office filed charges for the offence of driving a vehicle whilst intoxicated causing death, and requested the imposition of a custodial sentence and a ban from driving on public roads.
