Second-instance decision: ex-foreign minister's attacker remanded in custody

According to hodpress.hu, the Budapest Metropolitan Court overturned the first-instance ruling and ordered the remand in custody of G. Ferenc, who is suspected of attempted murder against former Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky and his wife.

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office requested the extension of detention, citing the risks of escape, disappearance and re-offending, but the Buda Central District Court rejected this. The first-instance court instead applied less stringent measures: house arrest with a requirement to maintain distance from the victims, and an obligation to wear a monitoring device.

The Budapest Metropolitan Court agreed with the first-instance court regarding the risks of escape and re-offending, but determined that less stringent measures could not be applied.

Géza Jeszenszky responded to the first-instance decision by saying he was concerned about the situation.

The 70-year-old G. Ferenc was first remanded in custody by the Budapest Metropolitan Court in June last year after attacking Jeszenszky Géza and his wife in the street with a hammer. The former foreign minister sustained life-threatening injuries and his wife suffered minor injuries; Jeszenszky underwent life-saving surgery.
