Cannabis plantation kept in yard, remanded in custody for one month

According to koroshircentrum.hu, the Battony District Prosecutor's Office initiated the detention of a 43-year-old and a 58-year-old man from Medgyesegyháza on suspicion of the crime of drug trafficking.

The 43-year-old suspect – who himself regularly uses drugs – decided at the beginning of 2025 to cultivate and sell cannabis. For this purpose, he used equipment previously belonging to his wife's business for medical hemp cultivation. He obtained the seeds from the Netherlands, planted some in his living room; the growing plants were harvested, dried and consumed.

In December 2025, he planted again from the previously purchased seeds. By March 2026, he had grown 100 cannabis plants reaching 150 centimetres in height. He cut these down, dried them, packaged the usable parts into bags, and in total concealed at least 2 kilograms of cannabis in the yard of his residential home, burying it in the ground.

He also sold some of the produced drug – among others to the 58-year-old man, who purchased it partly for his own consumption and partly for the purpose of further sale.

The detention was justified by several special reasons: given the expected severity of punishment, there was a danger of flight and hiding, a risk of reoffending, and there was also concern about influencing the evidentiary proceedings. The investigating judge of the Gyula District Court, agreeing with the proposal of the Battony District Prosecutor's Office, ordered the remand in custody of both defendants for one month.
