The Veszprém County police have suspected two individuals of the offence of assault after they used force against protesters in March at the prime minister's local forum.

The Veszprém County police have suspected two individuals of the offence of assault on reasonable grounds. The proceedings were initiated following events connected to a visit by Prime Minister Orbán Viktor to Veszprém in late March.
Footage recorded by an online news portal clearly shows two men forcibly snatching a banner from the hands of people who were demonstrating several hundred metres away from the event, beside a road. The demonstrators – including activists from an opposition party – were positioned well away from the venue and posed no threat whatsoever to the programme or its participants.
The authorities already suspected a 25-year-old man in May, and indicated at that time that further proceedings could be expected. Now they have confirmed that there are two suspects in the case. Both appealed against the decision, but the prosecution rejected their appeals.
At the scene, one of those involved denied that any incident had taken place and claimed he had arrived as a private individual. He declined to comment on what connection he had to a senior government party official. The other person involved was working at that time as a leading official representative at a ministry.
It recently emerged that during an inspection by the office of the prime minister, a document was found in which one of the suspects was listed as a contact person on behalf of the ruling party, with a party-affiliated email address. According to the government spokesman, this indicates that they may have acted in an organised manner for political purposes. If this is proven, the case could be reclassified as more serious.
The office of the prime minister forwarded the documents found to investigators as a supplementary complaint. According to a police statement, the clarification of any further circumstances remains a future task of the proceedings.
