The National Tax and Customs Authority is investigating an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of budget fraud in relation to the Pesti Magyar Színház for the period between 2022 and 2024.

The National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) is conducting an investigation against unknown individuals in connection with the Pesti Magyar Színház (PMSZ) on suspicion of the criminal offence of budget fraud. The investigation covers the period from the beginning of 2022 to March 2024.
Prior to criminal proceedings, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM) filed a report with the Prosecutor General in May 2024. During the ministry's own internal investigation, numerous irregularities were discovered in the theatre's financial management. At the time of the inspection, the institution was directed by János Zalán, who led the PMSZ for two terms.
According to the ministry's document, the circumstances uncovered could provide grounds for establishing multiple criminal offences. The report directs investigation not only of the director but also of potential complicity by employees working during the examined period.
The NAV's press office confirmed to Index that the necessary procedural steps are being carried out continuously, but details cannot be made public. According to the news portal's information, initial interrogations have been taking place for weeks.
János Zalán was appointed to head the Kolibri Színház in early 2025 against the objection of the company. Nagy Ervin, who later became cultural state secretary, described the decision at the time as a "cultural act of grace scandal".
