Corruption confession: how politicians divided bribes in Óbuda
Gergő Czeglédy, former socialist deputy mayor of District III, made a detailed confessional statement to the prosecutor's office in which he revealed how corruption money was divided between the district's two largest parties, according to Telex.
According to the former MSZP chairman, from 2006 onwards he and Fidesz leaders had agreed on how to divide bribes paid out through public procurements. Revenues from park maintenance work initially saw socialists receiving 10 to 15 per cent, later 30 per cent, then 70 per cent after 2019. In return, the opposition did not attack sensitive matters of the local authority.
According to the confession, Péter Puskás, the district's Fidesz deputy mayor at the time, signalled around 2014 that they were having difficulty obtaining funds and therefore needed subcontractor companies that would return part of their profits. Czeglédy established a company called KBT, which operated with a shell manager, and through this joined public procurements for park maintenance. Pannon Park Forest won the contracts and then distributed the money back to politicians through subcontractors.
Czeglédy was arrested in 2024 on suspicion of corruption and then spent nine months in prison. There he struck a plea bargain with the prosecutor's office, under which he made a detailed statement. According to the prosecutor's office June announcement, corruption money was divided between the parties in a 70–30 per cent ratio, with the proportions reversing as the balance of political power changed.
