A 32-year-old woman was taken into custody in the capital after Budapest's St John's Hospital filed a complaint against her. She is suspected of involvement in a patient's death, according to a report by HVG.
The Metropolitan Court justified the detention on the grounds that the woman is a foreign national, speaks several languages fluently, and has acquaintances abroad, therefore a flight risk exists. The investigating authority is currently conducting witness interviews.
The suspect previously practised at Saint Imre Hospital and at Uzsoki Street Hospital. The head of the latter institution told RTL News that no case of this nature had occurred at their facility. The woman left the Zugló hospital on 23 June after five years.
Health Minister Zsolt Hegedűs, speaking to television, emphasised that conclusions must be drawn from this case not only at the institutional level but also nationally. He said the details of the investigation were the police's responsibility, but they would address the matter. He did not comment on questions regarding the introduction of a legislative proposal on active euthanasia; this activity is currently subject to criminal penalties in Hungary.
If found guilty, the defendant could face a prison sentence of up to fifteen years.
