The fire alarm was raised in the early hours of 2 May from an underground car park in the XI district. Firefighters brought the blaze under control, and by early afternoon they had identified the point of origin of the fire. Several cars and motorcycles were damaged; an unconscious woman was found beside one of the vehicles, and paramedics were unable to save her life. The total damage to the building and vehicles came to approximately 240 million forints.
During the on-site investigation, it was quickly established that deliberate arson was behind the incident. Investigators from the Life Protection Department of the Budapest Police Headquarters conducted witness interviews, gathered evidence, and examined the circumstances with experts. According to suspicions, the perpetrator broke the window of a parked car, poured petrol into the interior, and then set it alight.
At 5:30 a.m. on 3 November, investigators arrested 47-year-old N. Ákos, the suspected perpetrator, at his flat in the VII district. During a search of the flat, electronic devices, keys to a nearby flat, and door-opening cards were seized. The clothes worn by the perpetrator at the time of the offence were found, and a balloon containing liquid of unknown composition was also retrieved from N. Ákos's car; suspicious substances were also discovered. The seized items are being examined by experts.
The man was questioned as a suspect on the basis of well-founded suspicion of the crime of causing death by endangering public safety. N. Ákos denied committing the offence. The court ordered his remand in custody.
