One-month remand in custody in District II grandmother's killing case
The Metropolitan Court ordered on Saturday early afternoon the one-month remand in custody of a 35-year-old man who killed his own grandmother on Thursday evening in Budapest's District II – the court announced, as reported by 444.hu.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the man for the offence of manslaughter against a person of limited capacity to avert crime on account of advanced age. The court established that in the event of the act being proven, a prison sentence of ten to twenty years or life imprisonment is possible, and the defendant's lack of stronger ties establishes a proximate and realistic danger of flight and evasion.
The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office initiated the remand on Saturday with the reasoning that the man's presence in the proceedings must be secured, the endangering of the proceedings must be prevented, and the possibility of recidivism must be ruled out.
A report concerning the case arrived at Budapest Police Headquarters on Thursday evening at eight o'clock: a man was shouting in the stairwell of a residential building in District II and quarrelling with his grandmother. The police and paramedics who arrived found the woman in the courtyard of the building, but they were unable to help her – she died at the scene.
The 35-year-old grandson was apprehended in the stairwell and taken into custody, and the BRFK Life Protection Unit initiated an investigation on suspicion of manslaughter.
