Former Fonyód mayor taken into custody
The former Fidesz mayor and his son were presented to police on Wednesday. According to suspicion, he caused damage of tens of millions of forints to the municipality through fictitious contracts and laundered money through a relative's bank account.

On Wednesday, police arrested a former leader of a Lake Balaton settlement and his child – according to Index. József Hidvégi, the former Fidesz mayor of Fonyód, is suspected of economic misconduct and money laundering.
The authorities questioned both men. The father was detained for three days, whilst his son was released. The prosecution has now asked the court to order longer-term detention for the former settlement leader.
According to investigation data, between 2019 and 2023, the individual in question signed documents on behalf of the municipal company relating to park maintenance and land clearance. According to the prosecution, there were no actual deliveries behind these. The work was actually carried out by the municipal company itself or other contractors.
Companies that belonged to the suspect's circle appeared as partners in the agreements – including one that was run by his son. This structure allegedly caused losses of over one hundred million forints to the budget.
Investigators are also examining how the money was moved. The assumption is that the former mayor persuaded a relative to open an account at a financial institution. Revenue from the fictitious transactions went into this account. Later, he instructed the woman to withdraw over forty million forints in cash and place it in the safe of a family tobacco shop.
Police and the prosecution have been investigating the case for more than seventeen months. The Kaposvár District Court will decide on the detention on Friday.
