Police investigate death of zebras at Hatvanpuszta
The Fejér County Police Headquarters has launched an investigation after three zebras belonging to a hunting association linked to Lőrinc Mészáros died. Ákos Hadházy has previously filed a report on suspicion of animal cruelty.
Police investigating suspected breach of obligations related to dangerous animal and dangerous dog ownership
According to Google News HU — Crime (hu), the Criminal Directorate of the Fejér County Police Headquarters has ordered an investigation against an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of breach of obligations related to dangerous animal and dangerous dog ownership.
At the centre of the investigation is the Vál-völgye Hunting Association, which is linked to Lőrinc Mészáros, and from whose ten zebras three have died. According to official documents, the hunting association has been keeping zebras since 2017: Pilla was the first, acquired on 5 May 2017, and the other nine specimens — including Zsebi, Szuszi, Pizsi and Bendegúz — arrived in May 2024.
The Fejér County Government Office confirmed to Telex that the hunting association reported the death of three zebras on 4 May this year. Administrative proceedings were also initiated in early June, under which they are investigating whether the association reported the death of the animals within the eight-day period prescribed by law.
Ákos Hadházy, former member of parliament, filed a report on suspicion of animal cruelty before the elections and again at the end of May, as footage from Hatvanpuszta consistently showed fewer zebras. The police rejected the notification on the first occasion; on the second occasion, they ordered a supplementary report, requesting the collection of further data and information.
The parallel administrative proceedings and police investigation together are examining what may have been behind the death of the animals. No perpetrator has been identified in the matter to date.
