Criminal proceedings launched against Eximbank on suspicion of abuse of authority and misappropriation
The National Investigation Office of the Ready Police has launched an investigation into Magyar Export-Import Bank Zrt. (Eximbank) – the institution announced on Tuesday on the police.hu website. According to Index, the case was based on four reports filed by the Ministry of Economy and Energy.
According to the investigative authority, the ministry's parliamentary state secretary filed the first report as early as mid-July, based on data uncovered during a review of Eximbank. The proceedings were initiated on grounds of abuse of authority and misappropriation.
On Monday, investigators seized thousands of pages of documents from the ministry. These are documents gathered during an internal investigation that provide further evidence for investigating the reported conduct – the authority's statement said.
The Prime Minister's Office announced at the end of August that the governmental reports filed so far can be tracked through a constantly updated website, atlathato.kormany.hu. The investigations preceding the 21 reports to date concern the use of a total of 2,103 billion forints – in other words, more than 2 trillion forints – of public funds. More than half of this amount consists of Eximbank matters.
