According to information from Google News HU — Crime (hu), the Criminal Directorate of the Fejér County Police Headquarters has ordered an investigation into the death of three out of ten zebras owned by the Vál Valley Hunting Association, which is linked to Lőrinc Mészáros – the Telex news outlet first reported the case.
The authorities have launched proceedings against an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of the crime of breach of obligations related to the keeping of dangerous animals and dangerous dogs.
Ákos Hadházy, a former Member of Parliament, filed a report on suspicion of animal cruelty before the spring elections and again at the end of May. Behind his decision was the fact that in footage from Hatvanpuszta he identified increasingly fewer zebras. The police initially rejected the report, but on a second occasion ordered a supplementary report and gathered further information.
The Fejér County Government Office previously confirmed that the hunting association reported the death of three zebras on 4 May. The administrative proceedings launched in June are investigating whether the association met its notification obligation within the eight-day period prescribed by law.
As part of the proceedings, they will also clarify what caused the death of the animals, what happened to the carcases, and whether the possibility of lead poisoning raised in public discourse can be substantiated. The outlet has sought the government office multiple times since Monday regarding the outcome of the proceedings but has received no response; it has sent additional questions to the Vál Valley Hunting Association.
