Romanian pair who conducted con tricks across country arrested
Two Romanian citizens who stole jewellery, cash and other valuables worth more than 14 million forints under various pretexts from shops across the country have been apprehended, according to police.hu.
The crime spree began on 24 July in a perfumery in Kiskunfélegyháza, where a wallet containing approximately 40,000 forints in cash, personal documents and bank cards disappeared from behind the counter. Investigators at Kiskunfélegyháza Police Headquarters quickly identified two Romanian men and established that the perpetrators had appeared in several cities employing similar methods: one would enter the shop and distract the shop assistant whilst the other stole valuables, with the second man waiting outside as a driver and providing the getaway.
In Hódmezővásárhely, the 44-year-old man posed as a jewellery buyer, whilst carrying two jewellery boxes – the value of the haul exceeded 4.5 million forints. In Piliscsaba, he offered painting work at a shop, then covered the shop assistant's phone with a piece of cardboard and left with it. In Budapest, he entered several jewellery shops: sometimes leaning over the counter with a large sheet of paper, sometimes placing the paper on the stand and then lifting bracelets away with it.
The trail of thefts led to Debrecen and Zalaegerszeg. After the thefts, the two men disappeared to an unknown location; investigators suspected they had left the country, so they issued an arrest warrant against them.
The search proved successful: on 7 October, investigators from Kiskunfélegyháza and riot police from Bács and Békés counties launched a coordinated operation against them in Kunszentmárton. The 44- and 31-year-old men were taken into custody. Investigators are seeking to have them remanded in custody on suspicion of theft committed as a business venture.
