A man in his thirties from Romania was remanded in custody at a court in southern Transdanubia after being questioned by police in Somogy county on suspicion of human trafficking – according to KaposPont.
The incident occurred on 9 June 2026 in the early morning hours. The suspect was driving a private car on Route 61, with five passengers inside and in the boot who had arrived across the Serbian-Hungarian border: four people from Turkey and one from Jordan. According to the case file, the driver's intention was to transport these people to the western national border, where they would have then unlawfully crossed into Austria.
Officers from Kaposvári Police Headquarters attempted to stop the vehicle near Taszár for a routine inspection. However, the driver ignored the signal and began accelerating. During the escape, the car went off the road verge and plunged into a drainage ditch. The Romanian man and his passengers got out of the wreckage and fled on foot, but the police unit caught up with and apprehended all of them within a short time.
At the initiative of the district prosecutor's office, the court ordered the suspect's detention in custody. According to the Penal Code, criminal offences of this nature, particularly when carried out in an organised manner and with the participation of multiple persons, are punished severely.
