Arrest of Miklós Seszták: 11 billion forint bribery case involving Volánbusz

According to 24.hu reporting, Miklós Seszták, a KDNP parliamentary representative and former development minister, was taken into custody by authorities on Monday over corruption allegations related to the Volánbusz affair. Seszták walked into the prosecutor's office personally to give a statement – before that, he gave an interview to 24.hu.
The chief prosecutor's office had previously made a motion to suspend the representative's parliamentary immunity. According to the suspicion, Seszták, as former development minister, together with Norbert Szivek, the former chief executive officer of the Hungarian National Asset Management Company who is already in detention, received 11 billion forints in bribes between 2015 and 2018 – from representatives of companies and subcontractors with contractual relationships with Volánbusz. According to the prosecutor's office, a corruption case of such magnitude is unprecedented in Hungarian circumstances.
In an interview given to 24.hu, Seszták said he had no idea what the prosecutor's office was basing the suspicion on, but as a lawyer he could only think that "they have made a plea bargain with someone". To the question of whether he considers this explanation sufficient for such a serious case, he replied: before the parliamentary election, before 12 April, he would not have thought that such steps would be taken, "but since then, in this heightened atmosphere, I can imagine anything". He added that in his view, in the public mood for the desired accountability "anything could happen".
