Two police officers not on duty were in the area near Okány on 7 January 2026 when two deer ran towards them. The animals were clearly fleeing from something. The district officer of the Szeghalmi Police Captaincy and the commander of the Sarkadi Police Captaincy, though on their rest days, immediately noticed the suspicious circumstances.

Following the wild animals was a flatbed vehicle, and alongside it a man walking with a sighthound. As soon as they noticed the police were watching them, the man on foot and the dog got into the car and drove away.

One of the uniformed officers followed the vehicle all the way to Vésztő, where he managed to stop it and question the driver. The man denied that he had been hunting without a permit. Meanwhile, his associate remained at the scene, where two dead animals were found: a female and a male deer.

The local police station commander and investigators from Sarkadi also became involved in the case. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody. The Sarkadi Police Captaincy initiated criminal proceedings against him on suspicion of poaching and attempted theft.
