Tobacco products concealed in the cargo hold of a vehicle checked at the southern state border have been seized by the authorities. The consignment was being transported in a lorry with Serbian registration, which declared it was carrying furniture.

At the Röszke crossing, officials scanned the van using an X-ray machine. The equipment detected areas of unusual density in the cargo, which necessitated a more thorough inspection.

The detailed search revealed a total of 8,440 boxes of cigarettes hidden inside the upholstered furniture. The products bore Kosovo tax stamps, and the total quantity exceeded 168,000 cigarettes.

The seized goods were taken from the transporter by staff of the financial authority. A criminal investigation was opened in connection with the case on suspicion of budget fraud.
