According to 24.hu, a recently published Facebook post by the Historical Archive of State Security Services revealed details of the 1986 incident.

Grigorij Nyikolajevics Luczkovics, a Soviet soldier stationed in Hungary, escaped from his Debrecen unit between 8 and 10 p.m. on 18 August 1986. He took with him a submachine gun and 60 rounds of ammunition.

The following morning a report came in from a citizen: the escapee was hiding on the outskirts of Hajdúszoboszló, near the Keleti-föcsatorna. The Hajdúszoboszló City Police Headquarters dispatched a four-person action group to the scene, which found the soldier in a scrubland area.

They approached to within approximately 20 metres and ordered him to surrender in Russian. The soldier responded by firing bursts at the police. The four officers returned fire, wounding and apprehending the escapee. Luczkovics died from his injuries whilst being transported to hospital. In the gunfight, one officer sustained a life-threatening injury and another suffered a serious wound.

The archival document concludes that the investigation was continuing.
