The Debrecen Court of Appeal has definitively increased the prison sentence of a man to 13 years, who doused his girlfriend with petrol and set her alight because she refused to leave her husband for him.

The court has definitively increased the prison sentence to thirteen years for a defendant who two years ago attempted to kill his lover by dousing her with petrol and then setting her alight. The decision was made by the Debrecen Court of Appeal at the instigation of the prosecution appeals office.
The injured woman was married, but in the summer of 2022 she entered into a relationship with the defendant. Her husband knew about it. On 11 October, in the afternoon, the woman visited the defendant's flat, where he asked her again to move out from her husband and start living together. The woman refused once again, which angered the man.
The injured party then set off for home. Not long afterwards they met again on the street. The defendant rushed towards her, grabbed her by the throat, and pulled her into the house. In the process, he threatened her by saying that if she did not stay with him, he would burn her. He held a knife to her neck, continuously threatening to kill her, then poured petrol on her and lit her clothes with a lighter.
The woman ran out of the building, tore off the burning textiles, and plunged her arm into a water tank in the yard. The man gave her a t-shirt, then threatened her again. The injured party fled to an acquaintance, who notified the police and paramedics. The victim's body sustained burns over approximately one quarter of its surface area, suffering first to third-degree burn injuries.
The appellate court, agreeing with the position of the prosecution, increased the previous eleven-year prison sentence by two years in order to achieve the aims of sentencing.
