A first-instance verdict was handed down on Thursday in a criminal case that ended with the death of an American-citizen nurse in the Hungarian capital in autumn 2024. The court sentenced the Irish-born defendant to fourteen years in prison for intentional homicide, and banned him from the country for ten years after completing his sentence.
Mackenzie Elizabeth Michalski worked at a neurosurgery clinic in Portland. In November 2024, she arrived in Budapest with a friend as a tourist. On the final day of her trip, she explored the city alone and that evening met her future killer in a downtown ruin bar. They left together to go to an apartment, where the man bound her, struck her in the face and body multiple times, then strangled the woman in her thirties. The court determined that the beating consisted of at least forty blows, and the strangulation lasted approximately two minutes.
After the crime, the perpetrator cleaned the body, hid it in a large suitcase, and then transported it by rental car to Lake Balaton to have it buried. Police apprehended him two days later. During the investigation phase, he admitted his actions but claimed it was an accident. At trial, he defended himself by saying the victim had requested the strangulation for the purpose of sexual gratification.
The court did not believe the explanation. According to the reasoning, the defendant's actions indicated not panic, but cold-blooded concealment. According to video footage, he walked out onto the street with his hands in his pockets, calm, and then went to buy beer and plastic bags.
When imposing the sentence, the panel took into consideration his clean record and words expressing remorse. However, it was an aggravating factor that the deed was particularly cruel and harmed the country's reputation.
Court costs came to 4.3 million forints, of which the convicted man must pay 2.5 million. Time and a half served in prison counts towards the sentence. The decision is not final: the defence has appealed, and the prosecutor requested time to make a decision. According to the defence, the court departed from the charge, as the prosecution charged the defendant with homicide committed through negligence, whereas the panel classified it as an intentional act.
The victim's family told journalists they were pleased that the judges had listened to the evidence rather than the killer's lies. They said nothing could bring their daughter back, but the verdict had brought some relief.
