Hundreds of drunk or drug-impaired drivers arrested in nationwide operation
Between 15 and 21 June, Hungarian police conducted a nationwide road check as part of the European ROADPOL Alcohol and Drugs operation, according to the official Police.hu statement.
During the week, patrol officers stopped one hundred and ninety-seven thousand and sixty drivers. In four hundred and eighty-two cases, police had to take action against drivers who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In two hundred and twenty cases, blood alcohol levels exceeded the criminal threshold. Eleven cyclists also violated traffic rules.
As part of the operation, a twenty-four-hour series was carried out on 19 June. During this period, fifty-one thousand six hundred and ninety-nine people were examined, and one hundred and fifty-six were found to be intoxicated or impaired. Two cyclists were also subject to proceedings.
The authorities emphasised that the figures demonstrate that regular and targeted operations remain essential for improving road safety.
