Court remands Veronika Varga-Bajusz in custody in NKA case

The investigating judge of the Kecskemét District Court ordered the remand in custody of Veronika Varga-Bajusz on Thursday, according to a statement from the press spokesperson of the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor's Office. According to reporting by eduline.hu, the former higher education state secretary was led into the courtroom by a holding officer.

Veronika Varga-Bajusz held the previous post of state secretary for higher education, vocational training and adult education, and youth matters at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. The MTI correspondent was also present in the courtroom and witnessed the person in question being led in hand in hand.

The former state secretary was presented to authorities at the beginning of the week and was then interviewed as a suspect. The prosecution proposed a 30-day remand in custody. The investigating judge's hearing was originally scheduled for 11 a.m., but began several hours late due to the prolonged questioning of Balázs Hankó.

Eduline had already contacted the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday regarding the presentation to authorities. The chief prosecutor's office at that time did not confirm, citing personal data protection reasons, whether the former official had indeed been presented to authorities, or if so, in what case.

The court decided several hours earlier on the remand in custody of Balázs Hankó, former minister of culture and innovation; in his case, a one-month measure of restraint was also ordered.

Hankó and Veronika Varga-Bajusz were interviewed as suspects on Monday in an investigation into payments from the National Cultural Fund. The proceedings are being conducted on the basis of a well-founded suspicion of the offence of unfaithful management committed in conspiracy, which causes particularly significant financial damage.

Balázs Hankó previously stated in an interview regarding the NKA scandal that he was preparing himself mentally for the possibility that he might end up in prison.
