The Budapest Investigation Prosecutor's Office subjected retired police general János Hajdu, who previously headed the Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK), to questioning as a suspect – reported Index.
According to the investigating authority, in March of this year seven persons from Ukraine were held in custody without legal grounds in degrading conditions. These acts came to light subsequently, which led to criminal proceedings against the former special services leader.
Hajdu headed the TEK for sixteen years. Several government-party politicians responded to the news. Tamás Menczer, Fidesz representative, commented on social media, emphasising that the former director-general had protected the country from the threat of terrorism for decades. Former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also took a stand in support of the former commander, characterising the proceedings as politically motivated. Prime Minister Péter Magyar spoke about who else might face similar circumstances.
The prosecutor's office has not yet disclosed the details of the evidence or precisely what crime the former general is suspected of. The investigation is ongoing.
