A 40-year-old man with no criminal record and resident in Cisterna di Latina was arrested on the evening of 22 September by carabinieri from the Nor – operational unit of the Anzio company. According to romatoday.it, the operation led to the seizure of 26 kilograms of cocaine, four Rolex watches, a sawn-off shotgun and almost 2,875 euros in cash.
The operation and escape attempt
Military personnel on patrol at around 22:00 noticed the 40-year-old entering his own home with a cautious manner, carrying some bags and repeatedly looking around him. The carabinieri surrounded the building to cut off every exit route, then entered the flat.
At the moment of the raid, the man attempted to dispose of the drugs by throwing a bag containing several packages of narcotics out of the window, which was promptly recovered by officers positioned outside. He then climbed over the balcony railing and scrambled onto the roof, but was stopped and handcuffed before he could escape.
The seizure: cocaine, Rolex watches and weapons
A search of the flat revealed an actual narcotics stockpile. The carabinieri seized 26 kg of cocaine, divided into 21 packages with specific markings and 9 smaller cellophane bags, along with precision scales and material for packaging doses. The four Rolex watches are currently the subject of investigations to verify their origin and authenticity.
The flat also contained four pistols, three shotguns and 501 cartridges of various calibres, all properly registered by the holder of a regular licence. One of the shotguns, however, had been modified by hand: both the barrels and the stock had been cut, transforming the hunting model into a high-danger weapon that was easily concealable. The altered shotgun was seized under criminal law for violation of weapons regulations; the remaining weapons and ammunition were withdrawn as a precautionary measure pursuant to article 39 of the Tulps.
In custody in Velletri
Following the completion of formalities, the arrested man was transferred to Velletri prison, placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities. The 40-year-old is suspected of possession with intent to distribute large quantities of narcotics and of altering weapons. The proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase: the suspect is to be presumed innocent until a final conviction sentence.
