79 arrests in Reggio Calabria in major 'Ndrangheta operation
79 people were arrested today in Reggio Calabria during a large-scale operation against the 'Ndrangheta. The prosecution ordered custodial remand in prison for 73 suspects, while another six were placed under house arrest.
The operation targeted the powerful De Stefano, Tegano and Condello clans. The accused face charges including mafia-type association, drug trafficking, extortion, robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to information provided by investigators, the inquiry has revealed the economic activities of the clans. These allegedly range from drug trafficking to extortion with protection money demands against merchants and entrepreneurs.
The Calabrian 'Ndrangheta is currently considered the most powerful Italian mafia organisation. The other three major criminal organisations in the country are the Camorra in Naples, Cosa Nostra in Sicily and the smaller Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.
