On Motorway A2, a check on a broken-down car led to the seizure of over two kilograms of cocaine and the arrest of a Calabrian driver.

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, a patrol from the Motorway Police Subsection of Lamezia Terme conducted a check on a vehicle stationary in a lay-by along the A2 Motorway of the Mediterranean. The intervention was aimed at providing assistance to the driver whilst awaiting roadside recovery due to a breakdown.
During initial investigations, officers noticed the man's evasive behaviour and state of agitation. He was of Calabrian origin. This circumstance prompted further checks through a search of the driver and the vehicle. In the boot compartment, two packages were found containing a total of over 2.1 kilograms of cocaine, along with €2,100 in cash and two mobile phones.
Rapid analysis carried out by the Scientific Police confirmed the nature of the substance. The man was arrested in flagrante delicto for possession of narcotic substances with intent to supply and transferred to Catanzaro Prison. During the validation hearing, the court ordered his release for procedural reasons.
The Public Prosecutor of Lamezia Terme appealed, requesting a new remand order given the seriousness of the conduct. The Judge for Preliminary Investigations granted the request swiftly, and the driver was returned to prison, where he remains at the disposal of the Judicial Authority. The proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase; the presumption of innocence applies to the person under investigation until final conviction.
