A 58-year-old prison police officer, currently suspended from duty and under house arrest, was sentenced yesterday by the judge for preliminary investigations in Lodi, following abbreviated proceedings, to three years and four months imprisonment for aggravated arson and unlawful exercise of his rights with threats. The events date back to the end of January, when the carabinieri intervened at a large condominium in San Giuliano Milanese after the entrance door of a flat on the eighth floor had been soaked with flammable liquid and set alight around 10 p.m. Inside were a 34-year-old woman — the officer's partner for several months — and her seven-year-old son.
That evening the woman, having returned from work, had fallen asleep early. The boy, who had remained awake at his computer and watching television, noticed that smoke was filling the flat and called the fire service, saving his mother's life and probably that of numerous neighbours in the building.
The officers found the man asleep on the landing of the sixth floor, with a small plastic bottle containing traces of flammable liquid. He appeared to be in a state of intoxication. He had been arrested in flagrante delicto and had spent several weeks in a cell before being placed under house arrest.
