A 51-year-old man has been arrested in Corigliano-Rossano, in the province of Cosenza, after attempting to attack his mother, with whom he lived, in front of police officers who had responded to a report of a family quarrel. The arrest in flagrante delicto took place on the evening of 17 June.
The operations centre had received a report of a violent argument inside a residential property. Officers from the Flying Squad, given the proximity of the location, arrived at the scene within minutes. As they got out of their car, they heard screaming coming from inside the building.
The officers entered the flat—the door was open—and found a man visibly altered, probably as a result of having consumed alcohol or drugs, attempting to punch a glass door that separated two rooms. On the other side was his mother, visibly terrified.
Despite the presence of law enforcement, the man continued to threaten the woman, shouting phrases such as "I will make you pay for this tonight". He then broke the glass with his fist and threw himself at his mother, who had already suffered injuries previously. Only the officers' immediate intervention prevented the assault from continuing.
At the police station, the woman confirmed that her son had been maltreating her for some time. The 51-year-old was arrested for domestic abuse and, on the order of the duty public prosecutor, transferred to Castrovillari prison.
At the validation hearing on 19 June, the judge validated the detention and ordered house arrest with an electronic bracelet, conditional on verification of the suitability of the specified residence.
