Assault at Bari Polyclinic: patient's husband strikes doctor, arrested

Punch to doctor in Neurology, husband held under house arrest

Two doctors in the Neurology department of Bari Polyclinic were assaulted by a man, the husband of a patient, during their shift, ANSA Cronaca reports. A female doctor was insulted; a colleague who came to her aid received a punch to the face that caused him a trauma to his left eye with injuries to the cornea and retina.

The assailant, with no criminal record, was stopped in flagrante delicto by Police and arrested for causing injury to healthcare personnel. He is under house arrest pending a trial by direct examination, scheduled for the following day. The on-duty prosecutor Lanfranco Marazia ordered the precautionary measure, requesting validation and immediate trial. The man is represented by lawyer Andrea Melpignano.

According to the reconstruction, the patient had been brought to the department by family members with a request for urgent admission. The Neurology doctors, who were already treating her, explained that admissions are arranged by Emergency Room doctors following appropriate assessment. The explanation provided by the on-duty female doctor was not accepted by the relatives, who began to insult her. Both doctors filed a report with Police, who intervened directly in the department.
