Attack with machete in Medicina: 57-year-old arrested for attempted murder
A 57-year-old Tunisian labourer has been arrested in Medicina (Bologna) for attacking a 28-year-old with a 50 cm machete. The victim is hospitalised in intensive care but is no longer thought to be in mortal danger.

Google News IT — Crime (it) reports that carabinieri have arrested the alleged perpetrator of the attack on a 28-year-old man found dying in his own home in Medicina, in the Bologna plain. The man arrested is a 57-year-old labourer, of Tunisian origin, resident in the same municipality in the Imola district. He was transferred on Monday to the Dozza prison in Bologna.
The victim remains hospitalised in the Intensive Care unit of Maggiore hospital under close observation. Arrived in desperate condition on 30 August, the 28-year-old is no longer thought to be in mortal danger.
The investigation and the role of surveillance cameras
The investigation was conducted by the Investigative Unit of Bologna, under the command of Colonel Claudio Gallù, and by military personnel from the Operational and Mobile Unit of Imola, led by Captain Gino Lifrieri. The two units presented their findings at a morning press conference.
There are strong indicators against the 57-year-old. The man has been in Italy since 1998 — with a brief absence before returning in 2023 — and has no relevant criminal record. Surveillance cameras in the area captured him approaching the victim's home by bicycle and, shortly afterwards, throwing an object into a nearby canal. The carabinieri recovered the object: it is a machete, approximately 50 centimetres in total length, believed to be the weapon used in the attempted murder.
Harassment of the mother, gaining entry with a pretext
According to witness statements, the 57-year-old had presented himself at the home asking for the young man's mother. The woman had been the subject of the man's attentions for months: since March he had begun to harass her by telephone in an increasingly persistent manner. The victim was involved with another person and had never filed a complaint, nor had he told his son anything. It was therefore the 28-year-old who opened the door to the labourer, who managed to gain entry to the house under a pretext.
The attack: punctured lung and arm nearly severed
Once inside, the man attacked the young man with the machete. The blows struck him on the head and chest, puncturing a lung, and nearly severed an arm after breaking the bones of the radius and ulna.
The 28-year-old saved himself by playing dead. When the attacker left, he managed to reach a nearby home and call for help, then lost consciousness shortly afterwards. Given the severe blood loss, he was transported by helicopter to Maggiore hospital in critical condition.
The arrest and the charge
The carabinieri located the 57-year-old in the late afternoon of Monday, still in Medicina, although it has not been ruled out that he was considering leaving the area. At the time of his arrest, he had a wound on a finger of his right hand, consistent with the use of the machete. He did not utter a word before the military personnel.
The labourer is now accused of aggravated attempted murder and is held in the Dozza prison in Bologna, awaiting his validation hearing.
