Alatri, twenty-year-old reported for web fraud: €1,000 stolen from a Milan woman with the pretext of selling furniture
A twenty-year-old youth, domiciled in the Alatri area, was referred to the magistracy by the Mobile Squad of the provincial capital of Frosinone for carrying out an aggravated fraud against a female citizen from Milan.
The incident began with an online advertisement. The woman, interested in purchasing furniture, agreed to pay the agreed sum — one thousand euros — via a top-up to a reloadable prepaid card. After making the payment, the victim received no further news from either the advertiser or the promised item.
The officers of Frosinone's Mobile Squad, having opened an investigation, traced the path of the money and identified the young man as the recipient of the sum. Telematic investigations confirmed his responsibility in the scam.
The law enforcement authorities are taking the opportunity to issue a warning: similar frauds proliferate on private buying and selling platforms. Criminals often push towards payments via prepaid top-ups, a method that leaves the buyer without any protection. It is preferable to rely on the payment methods offered by e-commerce sites, which hold the money in an escrow account until the purchaser verifies that the received goods conform to what was ordered.
