Convicted of unlawful influence peddling, the former right-wing politician has left the Roman prison. He was imprisoned at the end of 2024 for breaching the conditions of his social services order.

Former Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno left Rebibbia prison on Wednesday morning, after serving one year, five months and twenty-four days behind bars. Upon his release, which took place around ten o'clock, a crowd of journalists and activists awaited him outside the Roman prison. The news was reported by Il Fatto Quotidiano.
The man, now sixty-eight years old, had been definitively found guilty of unlawful influence peddling and sentenced to one year and ten months. Initially, he had been given the opportunity to serve his sentence outside prison through placement with social services. However, Rome's Surveillance Court, on 31 December 2024, annulled this alternative measure, finding that the former mayor had repeatedly breached the rules imposed on him.
In particular, the judicial authorities found that Alemanno had moved without authorisation, had not respected the established times, and had maintained prohibited contacts. For this reason, shortly before the start of the new year, he was transferred to detention at Rebibbia.
During the months spent in a cell, the former politician kept a diary on social networks. In his last message, posted the day before his release, he described the conditions of the prison system as "far more degraded" than he remembered, but also highlighted the resilience of detainees.
Upon his release, Alemanno stated that he was leaving "as an innocent man" and criticised the government for its handling of prison overcrowding. He also announced his return to politics alongside Roberto Vannacci's movement, clarifying that he does not aspire to political office but intends to offer his experiential contribution.
