27-year-old arrested after hitting motorcycle officer in Milan
A 27-year-old Albanian national has been arrested for vehicular homicide following the death of officer Francesco Imprezzabile, who died during a night-time pursuit in the Lombardy capital.
The young man, identified by the initials B.G., was already subject to a reporting obligation for another offence. After questioning before prosecutor Francesca Crupi, he was transferred to San Vittore prison.
The man admitted to driving the SUV that refused to stop and prompted the pursuit, but claimed he did not notice the motorcyclist falling. He also stated that he did not stop because he was carrying a small amount of hashish and did not want "trouble". There were three other people in the vehicle.
The pursuit began around 21:30 in via Vittorini, on the south-east outskirts of Milan, when the SUV ignored a police checkpoint. The driver accelerated, reaching considerable speed. In addition to Imprezzabile's motorcycle, two other municipal police motorcycles and one Highways Police patrol car joined the pursuit towards Peschiera Borromeo. At the height of via Milano, colleagues lost sight of the motorcyclist; shortly afterwards they found his motorcycle on the ground and, further ahead, the officer in cardiac arrest. He was assisted and taken to Niguarda hospital, where he died shortly after.
The SUV was traced to Pioltello, in the Milan hinterland. The driver was stopped in the province of Monza and Brianza alongside a second person, both Albanian nationals. Law enforcement are verifying the evidence against the two people stopped.
The commander of the Milan municipal police, Gianluca Mirabelli, explained at a press conference that at present there are no elements to establish whether there was contact between the SUV and the officer's motorcycle. Technical and scientific investigations of the vehicle are under way to clarify the accident dynamics. Investigations are continuing for vehicular homicide and dangerous flight.
On the matter, condolences have come from Republic President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Senate President Ignazio La Russa and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.
