The Railway Police have apprehended a 20-year-old who snatched a mobile phone from an American tourist at Venice Mestre railway station. The young man has been arrested and sentenced to 1 year, 1 month and 10 days.

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, the State Police in Venice have apprehended and arrested a 20-year-old for a mobile phone snatching carried out in recent days at Venice Mestre railway station. A patrol from the Railway Police, on surveillance duty, was activated after hearing the screams of a traveller coming from the station's pedestrian-cycle underpass.
The American tourist had just fallen victim to the theft of his mobile phone, violently snatched by a man who was attempting to flee along the underpass. The Railway Police officers immediately chased and apprehended the suspect, taking him to the office for thorough checks. The stolen mobile phone was recovered and proved to be the property of the victim.
The investigation revealed that the 20-year-old had numerous police records for crimes against property. The young man was arrested and placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority. Following the hearing, he was sentenced to 1 year, 1 month and 10 days in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 202 euros, with the sentence suspended. The Police clarify that the criminal proceedings are not concluded and that guilt must be established by final judgment.
