Magistrates from Rome's Anti-Mafia District Directorate have registered Valter Lavitola in the register of persons under investigation, suspecting him of having ordered the bomb attack against television presenter Sigfrido Ranucci. The explosion, which damaged the journalist's vehicle, occurred in the capital last autumn.
Lavitola, a well-known businessman and former head of a news organisation, was the subject of a search carried out by officers from the Carabinieri's Investigative Unit in Rome and Frascati. During the operation, officers seized electronic devices that will be examined to extract data useful to the investigation.
The case is coordinated by prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi. Initially conducted by public prosecutor Carlo Villani, who has since moved to head the Velletri prosecutor's office, the investigation is now being followed by Assistant Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Edoardo De Santis. Last week, four people — three men and one woman — were arrested, believed to be the perpetrators.
Lavitola and the four arrested individuals are charged jointly with the offences of possession and use of an explosive device, threats and damage to property, with the aggravating factors of mafia-style methods and the participation of more than five people.
The reasons behind the attack remain to be clarified by investigators, who continue to gather evidence.
