A 40-year-old motorist was arrested on 29 May in Vergato for resisting a public official, according to bologna24ore.it. The incident occurred during a public order operation carried out by the Carabinieri from Vergato Station together with the Local Police, on the occasion of a demonstration linked to the general strike.
It was the aggressive behaviour of the man driving a van that drew the attention of the law enforcement officers. Stopped to ensure the safety of protesters passing through, the 40-year-old began waving an Italian flag from the window, shouting phrases such as: "But do these people know we are in Italy?"
The man drove off at high speed, ignoring the stop order imposed for reasons of road safety. During the acceleration he risked running over a carabiniere and two protesters holding a banner. The officers chased him and stopped him a few hundred metres further ahead.
On the instructions of the Public Prosecutor on duty at the Public Prosecutor's Office of Bologna, the 40-year-old was taken to the Court of Bologna for the validation hearing and the concurrent direct judgment. The judge validated the arrest. Pending a hearing postponed following a request for a time extension for the defence, the man was released and placed under the obligation to present himself to the judicial police twice a week.
