Anti-drugs operation in Bologna: 420-kilo seizure

According to ansa.it, Bologna's mobile squad has completed a major operation resulting in the seizure of approximately 420 kilos of hashish and the arrest of six people for jointly holding controlled substances with intent to supply.

The investigation began after investigators obtained information about two brothers, residents of Anzola dell'Emilia, engaged in hashish trafficking. A surveillance operation was set up at their residence to monitor their movements. One of the two, aged 25, was seen boarding a white van driven by a young man of Moldovan origin.

When the vehicle stopped in a car park, officers believed a drug transaction was taking place and decided to intervene. Upon seeing the police, the Moldovan attempted to flee in the van, colliding with police vehicles and was immediately stopped.

In the van, officers found a rucksack containing bundles of banknotes in vacuum sealing totalling 63,000 euros and, in the rear compartment, a homemade false bottom hidden beneath a fake shelf. Inside were held numerous heat-sealed bags containing over 100 kilos of hashish in blocks.

The search was extended to the Italian man's residence, where his mother also lived. Shortly afterwards his brother, aged 23, arrived. In the flat, hidden in the refrigerator, almost six kilos of hashish in blocks and fragments were found, whilst in the bedrooms 5,760 euros in cash were seized.

Using a remote control found in the van, investigators located a storage facility in Sirmione, in Brescia province. Inside an apartment and a cellar, a further 305 kilogrammes of hashish were seized. The owners of the property, a couple aged 70 and 73, were also arrested.

The seized drugs would have yielded approximately five million euros if sold at street-level distribution points. The operation is part of the Bologna mobile squad's continuing anti-drugs activity, which just days earlier had already carried out the seizure of over 250 kilos of cocaine.
