Hit-and-run driver arrested for death of Daniele Congedi in Ugento

A 22-year-old has been placed in pre-trial custody in prison for the death of Daniele Congedi, 28, struck whilst cycling along the Racale-Ugento provincial road in the Lecce province on the morning of 9 August. This is reported by Google News IT — Crime (it), citing the order signed by Lecce investigating judge Valeria Fedeli, at the request of public prosecutor Luigi Mastroniani.

Congedi's body was found only late in the evening, hidden behind a shrub on the roadside. The autopsy established that the victim did not die immediately and could have been saved if given prompt medical assistance.

The driver did not stop to provide assistance and initially became unavailable. The following day he presented himself voluntarily to the carabinieri, stating through tears that he had not seen the cyclist and believed he had struck an animal. Subjected to drug testing, he tested positive for cannabinoids.

Nearly a month after the incident, investigating judge Fedeli accepted the request for pre-trial custody, justifying it with "a propensity towards predatory conduct" on the part of the 22-year-old, deemed "heedless of the consequences of his driving conduct". The evidence emerging from the investigation guided the judge's decision towards the most restrictive measure.

The defence lawyers, advocates Luca Puce and Davide Micaletto, announced an appeal to the Court of Review.
