Final convictions in Viareggio disaster: Mauro Moretti to serve 5 years
Judges from the fourth criminal section of the Court of Cassation have made final the convictions for the railway disaster that occurred at Viareggio station (Lucca) on 29 June 2009. Rejecting the appeals filed by the defence, the Supreme Court has confirmed the five-year sentence for Mauro Moretti, former chief executive officer of Ferrovie dello Stato and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and for the other ten defendants.
Moretti, who had been convicted on appeal, now risks being imprisoned to serve his sentence. The derailment of a freight train, which occurred in the night between 28 and 29 June 2009, caused the explosion of a tanker containing liquefied petroleum gas, resulting in the deaths of 32 people and injuring dozens of others.
