Unodc delegation in Palermo for Capaci: UN's first report on organised crime presented
The Unodc participated in the commemoration of the Capaci massacre in Palermo, presenting the first global UN report on organised crime.

Giovanni Gallo, head of the organised crime section at Unodc, and Gabriele Aiello, official for crime prevention and criminal justice at the UN office against drugs and crime in Vienna, took part at Palazzo Jung in the commemorative ceremony of the Capaci massacre, at the invitation of the Falcone Foundation. This is reported by ANSA Cronaca.
Unodc is the United Nations agency that holds the Convention against transnational organised crime, opened for signature in Palermo in 2000 on the initiative of then Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
"The Palermo Convention, which at the end of 2025 celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with a high-level event in Vienna in the presence of President Mattarella, still represents today the main international instrument for combating transnational organised crime", emphasises the UN Office. "It constitutes at the same time a symbol of the resilience of the international community and of Palermo's redemption against the mafias, but also an operational instrument of extraordinary effectiveness in cooperation between States, at the political, judicial and police level."
On the occasion of the mission, Unodc presented the first global United Nations report on organised crime. The document analyses the evolution of the phenomenon on a global scale and identifies strategic priorities and lines of action to strengthen institutional responses, even in the face of the most recent forms of organised crime.
"We believe that this 23 May can represent a particularly significant occasion to further enhance the link between Palermo — and more generally Italy — and the multilateral system for combating the mafias led by Unodc", Gallo and Aiello declared.
