On the evening of 23 June 2026 a 23-year-old man was found dead from hanging in his cell in Canton Mombello prison in the Brescia region. The young man had been arrested just two days earlier on suspicion of committing sexual violence against four thirteen-year-old adolescents in a water park in the province.

The man, an Indian citizen with asylum seeker status, had no previous criminal record. During his detention he admitted to his guilt. After spending the night between Sunday and Monday in a secure cell at the carabinieri barracks, he had been taken to the Brescia prison on the morning of 22 June.

Death occurred during the course of the following evening, when the detainee used a sheet to take his own life. The news prompted the Public Prosecutor's Office in Brescia to launch an investigation aimed at reconstructing the manner in which the individual was managed, considering that it was his first experience of incarceration.

Investigators will need to establish whether the personnel of the prison facility had implemented adequate monitoring procedures for an individual with no previous experience in a prison environment and whether all regulations relating to the supervision of detainees had been complied with.
