Choir director wanted by Canada for sexual abuse arrested in Rimini
A 63-year-old German, wanted by Ottawa police since 2019, was arrested at a hotel in Bellaria while on holiday.
Arrested in Bellaria with international warrant
The state police in Rimini arrested a 63-year-old German citizen on Wednesday, wanted by Canadian authorities for sexual assault, whilst on holiday at a hotel in Bellaria. This is reported by ANSA Cronaca.
The man — a choir director, orchestral conductor and sacred music teacher — had worked in various schools and parishes in Ontario and British Columbia before returning to Germany. Officers from the General Prevention and Public Assistance Unit of the Rimini Police Headquarters, led by Chief Commissioner Miriam Martufi, stopped him in his hotel room and verified his correspondence with the recipient of the international precautionary measure.
The arrest warrant had been issued in 2019 by the Sexual Assault Unit of the Ottawa Police Service, in relation to events dating back to approximately ten years ago: an alleged sexual assault against a member of the sacred music choir directed by the 63-year-old. The order had never been executed because the man had already left Canada at the time it was issued.
The arrested man is now in prison awaiting the validation hearing.
