Prison police officers discovered 20 grammes of cocaine, 100 grammes of hashish and an iPhone hidden amongst food items intended for the Fermo prison canteen. According to ilrestodelcarlino.it, the 40-year-old arrested man had been hired as a temporary substitute for the supplies officer last Thursday, when the permanent employee was on holiday.

Commander Antonio Mottola had already noticed circulation of illicit substances in the cells. Officers decided to conduct a thorough inspection of the supplies worker's cargo: the cocaine was hidden in a cigarette packet, the hashish amongst carrots and fennel. Police also found cash in the man's car; a subsequent search of his home yielded no results.

The 40-year-old, known to law enforcement for minor previous offences, was arrested on suspicion of drug dealing. The following day, the judge for preliminary investigations Maria Grazia Leopardi ordered house arrest, on behalf of defence lawyer Luca Bellabarba. The man exercised his right to remain silent during the validation hearing.

Prison police are conducting further inquiries to clarify who organised the supply and which inmates were the intended recipients of the drugs and mobile phone. Developments may come in the short term, as investigations continue.
