Drugs and mafia in Catania: fresh arrests in "Carcagnusi" clan

Ten people have been arrested in Catania in an operation conducted by police against the "Carcagnusi" clan. Six of them have been taken into custody, whilst four others have been placed under house arrest. The measures were ordered by the judge for preliminary investigations of the Sicilian capital, at the request of prosecutors from the District Public Prosecutor's Office.

The investigation is part of a thread opened last 8 June, when measures were already taken against another twenty suspects. The charges concern, amongst other things, membership of a criminal organisation of mafia type and a consortium dedicated to drug trafficking, both aggravated by mafia methods.

In detail, those under investigation must also answer for illegal possession of weapons, both military and unlicensed, as well as an attempted murder with mafia aggravating circumstances. The operation saw the participation of officers from the Mobile Squad of Catania, supported by the Central Operations Service and colleagues from Palermo and Reggio Calabria.
